Villefranche-de-Rouergue

The river Aveyron flows through Villefranche-de-Rouergue. On the right bank lies the old town centre (1252), one of the largest medieval bastides in France. At its heart stands the magnificent Collegiate Church. Villa des Mots sits high on the left bank — from the balcony you look out over the centre and the monumental church.

In the town

In summer it is possible to look out over the town from the bell tower of the Collegiate Church. You will need to climb 163 steps — but the view over the bastide is the reward. Check opening times via Tourisme Aveyron.

For an even wider panorama: a short but steep walk to the calvaire viewpoint. You can also get there by car.

The Thursday market is well-known for miles around. The colourful market in the picturesque setting of the bastide is well worth a visit. Buy something nice, or better still something delicious — and help keep the market alive.

La Manufacture

The wonderful library of Villefranche-de-Rouergue. A beautiful building that any book lover will find themselves visiting regularly. There are often readings or exhibitions. As well as a library, it also has a games library and a mediatheque.

The river & the gorges

Gorges de l'Aveyron

The Aveyron meanders through a deep valley. The river carved its way through the limestone to create the Gorges de l'Aveyron — an impressive gorge of around twenty kilometres, spread across the départements of Aveyron, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne.

Along the way you pass medieval bastides such as Najac, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and Bruniquel — all built at strategic points along the river. You can go kayaking or walk dozens of kilometres of waymarked trails.

The Gorges du Tarn, a little further on, are equally well worth a visit.

Dining in Villefranche

Villefranche has a good number of places to eat. A restaurant lunch is recommended — just as good as the evening meal, but less expensive. It is perfectly normal here to eat alone in a restaurant.
